What should I do if I see the error "Invalid SIM" or "No SIM Card Installed?"

A Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card is a small "smartcard" that contains a unique identification number and stores subscriber profile information. SIM cards contain information about the subscriber's plans and network features. If the SIM card is not programmed properly, damaged, or removed, it prevents operation of the intended device.

  1. Check to make sure the SIM card is properly installed. To insert the SIM card, you will need the SIM removal tool that came with your iPhone. Insert the removal tool into the hole in the SIM card slot on the side of your phone, then slide the tray out. Place the SIM card on the tray, with the gold contact facing down.
  2. iPhone models without a HOME button: press and hold the POWER/LOCK and VOLUME DOWN keys until you see the "slide to power off" screen. Slide the slider to the right to power the device down.
iPhone models with a Home button: press and hold the POWER/LOCK key until you see the "slide to power off" screen. Slide the slider to the right to power the device down.
  3. Wait 30 seconds, then press and hold the POWER/LOCK key until the screen lights up. Wait for the device to boot up, and then unlock it if necessary.
  4. Try a new SIM card.
